What's it all about? One of Sheffield's most innovative bands is an accolade that sits fairly and squarely on the Balor Knight's mantle. Bringing us their unique brand of edgy, lo-fi, leftfield girl-boy meta-indie, they regularly pack twenty songs in a thirty minute set, make hand knitted band name logos and have a drummer called "Enthusiastic Dave" because he's, erm, enthusiastic. Regular musical comparisons include the likes of Graham Coxon, Scarfo, Frank Zappa, At The Drive-In and The Pixies. Since the triumphs of their sell-out split single on fellow Sheffield DIY indie label Thee SPC, The Balors have slimmed down to a four piece without any detrimental effects to their chaotic noise pop. Current PPR single "Tornado" is a true indie-pop classic. Marc Riley certainly thought so: after hearing said song he promptly invited them on to his 6Music show to do a three song live set. Focus of the band is hyperactive guitarist singer Howard Price. We'll leave Howard to have the last word: "We're a disco Pixies, or a pop Blood Brothers, or maybe Hot Hot Heat without the crushing record label obligations". We get the frequency! |
